Local Heating Transforms Amorphous Calcium Carbonate to Single Crystals with Defined Morphologies

چکیده

The use of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) as a precursor phase affords organisms with outstanding control over the formation calcite and aragonite biominerals. Essential to this strategy is that ACC maintained within confined volumes in absence bulk water. This ensures undergoes pseudomorphic transformation organism can independently nucleation growth. However, comparable has proven hard achieve synthetic systems. Here, straightforward method demonstrated for controlling crystallization thin films which first triggered using heated probe, then growth sustained by incubating film at lower temperature. By growth, sub-millimeter single crystals be generated when where it desired, morphologies ranging from discs squares serpentine strips created, arrays formed. mechanism energetics are studied situ transmission electron microscopy continuity between front demonstrated. It envisaged applied large alternative functional materials form via phases.

Phase transitions in biogenic amorphous calcium carbonate.

Crystalline biominerals do not resemble faceted crystals. Current explanations for this property involve formation via amorphous phases. Using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM), here we examine forming spicules in embryos of Strongylocentrotus purpuratus sea urchins, and observe a sequence of three mineral phases: hydrated amo...

Structural characterization of amorphous calcium carbonate-binding protein: an insight into the mechanism of amorphous calcium carbonate formation.

ACC (amorphous calcium carbonate) plays an important role in biomineralization process for its function as a precursor for calcium carbonate biominerals. However, it is unclear how biomacromolecules regulate the formation of ACC precursor in vivo. In the present study, we used biochemical experiments coupled with bioinformatics approaches to explore the mechanisms of ACC formation controlled by...

Self-assembly of amorphous calcium carbonate microlens arrays

Biological materials are often based on simple constituents and grown by the principle of self-assembly under ambient conditions. In particular, biomineralization approaches exploit efficient pathways of inorganic material synthesis. There is still a large gap between the complexity of natural systems and the practical utilization of bioinspired formation mechanisms. Here we describe a simple s...

Glycolytic intermediates induce amorphous calcium carbonate formation in crustaceans.

It has been thought that phosphorus in biominerals made of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) might be related to ACC formation, but no such phosphorus-containing compounds have ever been identified. Crustaceans use ACC biominerals in exoskeleton and gastroliths so that they will have easy access to calcium carbonate inside the body before and after molting. We have identified phosphoenolpyruvat...

Coexistence of amorphous and crystalline calcium carbonate in skeletal tissues.

We describe a new type of composite skeletal tissues in which calcite and stabilized amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) coexist in well-defined domains. The organisms that form such structures are widely separated in the animal kingdom phylogenetic tree: calcareous sponges and ascidians. This paper compares the microstructures of their composite skeletal elements: The triradiate spicules from th...
